The Committee

The AVS Committee is made up of an Executive (elected at Congress) and two representatives from each school. Please do not hesitate to contact them if you have a query, contribution or difficulty. The Committee meets three times a year to organize AVS events, discuss problems/developments at the various colleges and in the profession as a whole. These meetings enable the student bodies at the colleges to work and campaign together for necessary changes and to exchange ideas and possible solutions to problems.

I became involved in AVS through academic family, and my only regret is that I didn't get involved sooner! It is such a great way of getting to know students from other universities (social wise) but also learning how the other universities work.

Editor of AVS magazine JAVS

IVSA Rep (and President of IVSA UK chapter) - Jenny Sinclair
Bristol, intercalating in Vet Pathogenesis

I joined the IVSA (international veterinary students association) after going on an amazing group exchange in my fresher year with Bristol vet school to the vet school in Budapest.
It was fantastic and I have been infatuated with the IVSA since. I believe entirely in all its aims and goals and want to help as much as possible to achieve them as well as having a lot of fun on the way.
I became a Bristol rep for IVSA soon after the exchange, then out of the blue, was elected president of UK and Ireland - its scary, exciting and very demanding but I love it.
I am now intercalating in Vet path after completing my third year at Bristol and I am thoroughly enjoying the combination - it definitely keeps me on my toes.
And an extra bonus is that we (the IVSA of Uk+I) collaborate with the AVS and are part of the AVS so I'm in the committee.
This is brilliant because it exists for the same reasons as the IVSA on a UK scale instead of world wide, and I have met so many unforgettable lovely people with the AVS. I would suggest to everyone that reads this to find more out about the IVSA and AVS - what the organisations can do for you, and what you can do for them, after all you are all members!! ....make the most of it

Attend BVA committee meetings

Junior Vice President - Julie Dauncey
Third Year Edinburgh University

I am a third year at Edinburgh and am from the now non-existent county of Cleveland. Generally like to be in the middle of things, particularly if drinking or horses are involved (I'm a dedicated student. honest).
Why am I involved with AVS? I have asked myself several times when answering barrages of emails about sports and arguing with bus companies!! It is a chance for some responsibility and to get involved with vet school life. It is also a lot of fun- more than I thought when I volunteered!!

Ski Rep - Kristina Kirk
RVC

Hi I’m Kristina, I’m the AVS Senior for RVC and Ski Rep this year. I’ve been at RVC for almost 3 years now and living in central London has taught me a lot, like how to live off £10 in London! But I’ve also really enjoyed meeting a total mix of people and experiencing a completely different side of life as I come from a more rural background. I became involved in AVS after finding out how important it is to us at vet school and I wanted to have a better understanding of what happens outside the profession in terms of BVA and political dealings within veterinary medicine. This last year as AVS Junior gave me a sample of AVS and now as Senior I’m getting to grips with the responsibilities and organisational skills that come with the job.
It’s been great so far and I really enjoy knowing what goes on and getting involved, basically being able to make a difference to my education as well as many others! So I hope you find out a bit more about AVS and what we do for everyone and maybe get stuck in yourself

Bristol Senior - Lucy Croft

Cambridge Senior - Natalie Haddon

I am a fifth year Cambridge Veterinary Student who joined the AVS committee in my third year. I joined to get involved in the AVS student events but to also address the issues that veterinary students experience during university and to make a change! I have enjoyed my experiences on the AVS committee and will be sad to pass the job over in the coming April.
